When Monongalia County Schools operate on a 2-hour delay,
the WVU Nursery School will open at 9 a.m.
When WVU modifies its schedule, the WVU Nursery
School will follow WVU’s cancellation notices. For
example, when classes are canceled until 10:00 a.m. or
later, the AM class will be canceled.
3-Year-Old Class Update: The morning class has been on the move with our transportation study! We had a blast
reading Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems and building with roads. We are also continuing to learn about Piet
Mondrian and how he used lines to create abstract art.
4-Year-Old Class Update: In the afternoon class, we have wrapped up
all things fall. Recently, the children have been interested in designing houses,
hotels, and sewer systems (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). To encourage this interest,
we are going to begin talking about architecture. Please look for a family engagement activity
coming home at the end of the week.
3-Year-Old Class Update: In the morning class, we are continuing our study of pumpkins!
We also enjoyed the hot air balloons last week and learned
more about what makes them float. To begin our Classical Art
study, the students looked at pictures by 4 famous artists and
voted for their favorite. Because Piet Mondrian was the
winner, we will begin learning about the abstract artist and his
paintings before creating a canvas painting of our own. We
will also begin to transition into our study of transportation.
4-Year-Old Class Update: In the afternoon class, the children have been busy exploring
fall leaves and pumpkins. Through various experiments, they
were excited to learn about why leaves change color in the
fall! They have explored pumpkins by identifying their parts
and investigating the pumpkin life cycle. We have continued
to work with 2D and 3D shapes, as well as various forms of
measurement.
We are well into the school year and have settled into a routine. Whether it is meeting new friends, getting reacquainted with old friends, exploring the WVU Nursery School classroom, or engaging in new topics, the year is off to a great start!
The 3-year-old class has developed safety rules for the classroom, read silly stories like “There was an old dragon who swallowed a knight” by Penny Parker Klostermann, and explored pumpkins. Recently, they began their Classical Art study by looking at pictures by four famous artists and voted for their favorite. Because Piet Mondrian was the winner, they will begin learning about the abstract artist and his paintings before we create a canvas painting of our own.

Three-Year-Old Update: The students have loved reading the silly story There
Was an Old Dragon Who Swallowed a Knight by Penny Parker Klostermann. They reenacted
the story using puppets and used the blocks to build a giant castle outside. We
have begun transitioning into our pumpkin study and the students have loved washing
the pumpkins in the sensory table. Please feel free to send Erin pictures of your
child getting their pumpkin this year so we can display them in the classroom.
We have been busy engaging in art and music experiences, reading, creating friendships,
establishing routines, and exploring the environment around us. There are numerous
adventures and activities coming up over the school year. We look forward to experiencing
them with you and your child.
We are dedicated to ensuring you and your child have the best experience at the WVU
Nursery School. We are ready to nurture your child and cultivate the wonder within!

In the morning, we have continued to practice making safe choices and learning our new routines at school. We have begun working on our play plan. The students enjoy writing or tracing their name and drawing a picture of what they plan to do each day.

In the 4-year-old class, we are settling into a routine. Over the past two weeks, we explored nature items, light and shadows, a (dead) baby snake, and animal poop (found on the playground). Last week we researched dinosaurs. You can find some of the exciting activities listed in their contract.

What an amazing first week of school! We were very busy reacquainting with old friends, meeting new friends, exploring the Nursery School, and learning! By the end of the week, and maybe the end of the day, we were exhausted.
The first week can bring lots of emotions, from excitement and wonder to apprehension. All are normal and to be expected. As we settle into the routine, some will dissolve, but we hope that excitement for learning will always remain. Please let us know if your child is experiencing any reactions so we can assist at school.
